Last winter's heavy rain has had a big impact on gardens. Besides 'drowning' plants, it has washednutrients out of the ground, leavingthe soil seriously impoverished. Even year-round container displays, left outside in the monsoons, had every scrap of feed washed out of their compost.So on top of a poor spring, part of the reason that plants aren't 'taking off is that they are starving. Small, pale leaves, weak spindly growth and poor flowering are all symptoms of general nutrient shortage. You'll notice it particularly on fast-growing plants such as vegetables, spring bedding and perennials, which should by now be growing quite strongly.Woodier plants, such as trees and shrubs, are more resilient since they store some minerals in their woody tissues, and the early-summer-flowering sort should have initiated their buds late last year so they'll probably flower quite well despite it all.
