For the third year in a row, Manitoba beekeepers reported losing close to a third of the colonies that were put into winter. The phrase, "that was the worst winter" or "that was the worst spring ever" has been playing like a broken record since 2007.It is very disheartening when you hear that some producers have lost 50% or more of their colonies. On the flip side, this spring some beekeepers have reported that colony losses this past winter were a lot closer to normal or even above average survival rates. In some cases this optimism was short lived, when the losses in the spring due to dwindling brought the total losses back up to the 25 - 30% range.
