Observer-based Fault Detection of Technical Systems over Networks

The thesis focuses on topics related to fault detection (FD) problems of technical systems where networks are (partly) used for data transmissions. Based on the systematic modeling of network-induced time-varying transmission delays, packet dropouts, quantization errors and bit errors, two observer-based schemes for the purpose of FD of technical systems over networks are designed: an FD system for detecting faults in technical systems at a remote site and an FD system for detecting faults in networked control systems. The presented schemes have the following characteristics: (1) they are optimal in the sense of achieving the best trade-off between the sensitivity to system faults and the robustness against system disturbances and network-induced effects, (2) they can provide reliability information of rising fault alarms, (3) the design problems can be efficiently solved by means of existing efficient numerical solvers.
