"Model-based Fault Detection and Diagnosis for a Common Rail Diesel Engine" presents the systematic design of a comprehensive model-based fault detection and diagnosis system for the monitoring of common rail Diesel engines. The first main part deals with a newly developed fault detection module for the common rail injection system. Within this module, two different model-based fault detection algorithms have been used which allow for the detection of various faults. For example faulty injectors, a clogged fuel filter, a faulty common rail pressure sensor value and leaks can be detected and diagnosed. The second main part presents the development of an overall fault diagnosis system based on fault detection modules for the intake air system, exhaust gas system and the combustion and mechanics. Additionally, the important issue and benefit of operation point dependent diagnosis is addressed. All methods have thoroughly been tested experimentally at a testbed.
