This thesis addresses engineers in research and development working on control layout for transport processes with discrete system parts. To handle various types of transport problems, a generalized platoon description is introduced that allows to study common system properties and design control algorithms suitable for a wide set of applications. Besides stationary control goals guaranteeing the stabilization of relative motions among platoon members, performance measures are discussed and included into the control layout to tune the transient behavior as well. Since platoon applications often require a communication network to achieve the demanded control performance, the influence of communication constraints is further analyzed and a control reconfiguration is proposed to improve performance in cases of limited information access. Results of the proposed control method are presented for the application of a vehicle platoon with one leading and three following vehicles through simulations and physical experiments.
