The four-position proportional valve has become more common recently to control the speed and position of linear positioners. These valves have replaced the standard servo valves in many applications The primary operational difference is that a proportional valve uses an electrical feedback to position the spool, whereas the traditional servo valve has an internal mechanical feedback. The four-position valve is used in two applications. The first is to direct oil to and from a linear positioner (cylinder) or a hydraulic motor. The valve is also used to control the position of a larger valve. In this case, it is used only as a pilot valve to direct oil for shifting the main spool This "two stage" valve is used to handle larger flow rates, usually 15GPM and above.
