Recognition and interpretation of deep-water sediment waves: implications for palaeoceanography, hydrocarbon exploration and flow process interpretation

Deep-water sediment waves have been discovered in a variety of modern contourite and turbidite systems over the last 50 years, and they are surely one of the most comprehensively described deep-water bedforms. Nevertheless, there is still much to learn about these impressive seafloor features, in particular the processes responsible for their initiation and growth, and also how they can be distinguished from other features that display a similar appearance, such as creep folds and extensional faults. This Marine Geology special issue tackles some of these unanswered questions, and as such represents a substantial advance in our knowledge of wave-forming processes, specifically bottom (contour) currents and turbidity currents. This issue also provides insight into how sediment waves can be used to unravel past oceanographic regimes. In addition, the recognition of sediment waves in both modern and subsurface environments is investigated, and the potential applications to hydrocarbon exploration and production are discussed. The papers are broadly subdivided into two categories; sediment waves related to turbidity current flow and sediment waves related to bottom current flow. As you will see there are some examples where the boundaries between these two categories become distinctly blurred, but such is the nature of our science!
