Our foundry produces large-scale iron castings. A lot of the production costs seem to be fairly predictable. However, the cost of the furan no-bake binder system (FNB) is always fluctuating, and at times it is quite volatile. I am told this is because of significant changes in raw material pricing for FA (furfuryl alcohol.) Are there any alternatives? The simple answer is, yes, you should have access to alternatives. Fortunately, furan-based binder technology is not the only option for producers of large-scale ductile iron castings. ASK Chemicals LLC recently developed a new phenolic urethane no-bake binder system (PUNB) with extremely long sand working life, called PEP SET Patriot. Why is this important? The chemical formulation of this product is entirely different than furan. Thus, it contains different base raw materials. In other words, consumer choice is now back - especially for those periods when FA prices are increasing.
