Mr. Gaugain, a farmer in Normandy (Calvados), uses a forage system based exclusively on grass, which is highly performing. He produces 275000 l milk (46 cows, 6000 l/cow) and 30 steers (sold at 450 kg) on 81 ha native pastures whose production is well distributed over the year; the stocking rate is 1.4 L.U./ha. He aims at a high-quality produce obtained with a simple and thrifty feeding system: limited concentrate costs (0.15 F/l milk), exclusive grazing during 8-9 months (40, later 85 ares per cow). The calvings are relatively well distributed over the year (50% in autumn), so as to get a more even production of milk and meat. Strip grazing is practised, with a fence in front and one behind, and is permanently adjusted to get herbage of constanthigh quality; with the same aim, nitrogen fertilizers are applied (lightly) according to the growth of grass; the paddocks are topped; the heifers and steers graze after the dairy cows and clean the pastures; care is taken of the accesses to limit trampling...
