On Multi-Product Development and its Impact on the Environment

The present dissertation is directed at engineers and researchers interested in the domain of Design for X. It aims at establishing insight on why companies structure their products in size ranges, modular systems and product platforms and how this structuring impacts the environment. Besides investigating fundamental models and theories, the dissertation establishes two methods for supporting product developers. The first method permits to derive the environmental impact of product programmes from the assessment of a basic design by exploiting geometric similarity, which contributes to simplifying assessment methods, all by maintaining their precision. The second method, based on a Design Structure Matrix, serves to identify module candidates with reference to strategic reasons for modularising products, the so-called modularisation drivers. According to the application-oriented approach of the research, accompanying product examples demonstrate the value of the presented methods, but also point out their limitations.
