摘要

The presence of materials and manufacturing defects in honeycomb composite materials sandwich structures affects the overall performance characteristics of the sandwich structure. This paper offers a first, comprehensive system for the classification of various manufacturing defects encountered in honeycomb composite materials sandwich structures production. The system groups all defects into four main categories with the provision for analysis of each defect down to its reason. It is open-ended, thereby allowing for the addition of new types/groups of manufacturing defects pertaining both to the materials' properties and the materials' manufacturing history. The system will be of most value in the analysis of honeycomb composite materials sandwiched structures manufacturing technologies. It can be used both for the analysis of existing processes and for new technological developments. For an existing technology, analysis with the system offered will provide simple logical means of tracing manufacturing defects back to their origins. With a new technology development, the system can become an important design tool for anticipation of possible manufacturing defects thereby allowing for an early alleviation of defects at the technology development stage.
