摘要

Genetic Algorithms do not raise so many eyebrows in the materials community as it used to, once upon a time, not too for in the distant past: After all, this is for the third time we are coming up with a special issue on this topic in a pioneering journal called Materials and Manufacturing Processes. When we started out with the first Genetic Algorithms issue of this journal in 2003 [1], many in the materials' community were bemused by a ragtag international group of process modelers' apparently quixotic attempt, so some of them told me, to take the mainstream materials research head-on with their pseudobiology. The fact remained that what was attempted was neither frivolous nor ludicrous. In 2005 a highly focused second Genetic Algorithms issue of this journal [2], very convincingly hit that point home. Now, here we are once again ready with the third Genetic Algorithms issue: Hear ye, materials' world, you got very little choice but let us in! What I said in my first editorial back in 2003 [1] is certainly valid even toady: Genetic Algorithms simply denote the shape of things to come in the materials world. Today, mimicking the nature and the natural processes is certainly creating a difference there. Evolutionary applications are now ubiquitous in the materials' field; its practitioners are worldwide. It simply is not a surprise for anybody toady that here in this particular issue we are able to assemble some ground breaking efforts of researchers of nine different countries, that is, Brazil, Finland, India, Poland, Singapore, Slovenia, Turkey, U.K. and the U.S.A., on some diverse materials applications: from metals to polymers, assembling at a nano-scale to processing in industrial furnaces. Global participation has never been a problem for us, even in the first Genetic Algorithms issue; however, what we have started out in 2003 [1] has now blossomed into an enviable maturity.
