This study deals with the understanding ofcreep crack initiation and creep crack growth in 316 LNaustenitic stainless steel. To evaluate the respectiverole of the creep strain and that of the main principalstress on intergranular creep damage, original creepexperiments were performed on sharp notched thin walltubular specimens in 316 LN steel tested in torsion at 600℃. The specimens contained a sharply notch perpendicularto their axis. This resulted in overall Mode II loading.In the first part of the paper, the results of fourexperiments are reported, then, in the second part, adamage model identified previously and based onquantitative observations of grain boundary damage isused to simulate creep crack initiation and creep crackgrowth. Good agreement between the experimental resultsand the numerical simulations is found.
