The author (C. D., ERA Technology) stated that some HRSG's were designed for base load (and had sparse instrumentation), and introduced a case study where exhaust from a natural gas fired gas turbine (150 MW) generated HP steam at 8.6 MPa and 510 deg C for the steam turbine and IP and LP steam for ancillary purposes. Cyclic-induced stresses had pointed up certain design weaknesses and installed monitoring had identified cyclic damage mechanisms in critical boiler components. In the gas turbine, the exhaust gases flowed through vertically suspended tube banks. The unit had run for 60,000 h with over 200 starts and over 100 trips.A phased approach' to the problem was described in detail. In Phase 1, plant records were consulted and components at risk identified. In Phase 2 during an outage, condition assessment was performed on selected points e.g. superheaters, welds and ligaments. Based on this initial assessment, locations were selected for further thermo-coupling e.g. superheater outlets and economiser inlet headers. Phase 3 concerned data collection. This covered 4 months of normal operation, 6 shutdown/start up transients and the subsequent analysis.
