The paper discussed the problems caused when dissolved oxygen was present in boiler makeup water. This could induce corrosion fatigue in feedheaters and economisers, in the temperature range 150-288 deg C. It could also lead to deposits that plugged tubes and led to turbine blade pitting. One of the serious issues in the cyclic operation of plants was the fact that deaeration was difficult after weekend start-ups, when there was a shortage of steam. Additions of hydrazine were not effective at this time, as water temperatures were too low.
