Without the backing of the business, the maintenance function is lost. Without the maintenance function backing, the business is lost. Unfortunately to the eternal detriment of most companies the fact is maintenance engineers do not understand the need to justify their every purchase or action, in financial terms, to the business controllers. Equally the business controllers don't see the need to invest in maintenance if the financial justification is not crystal clear. A classic catch 22 situation. You can't have a maintenance function if there isn't a business and you won't have a business if there isn't a maintenance function. Within process, production and manufacturing industries, proving the business case in financial terms is the key to unlocking finance for maintenance purposes and confusingly the business existence is inevitably reliant on this occurring. This paper will describe how, by focussing on financial issues, maintenance can improve its overall standing within a business.
