With Chinese exports of finished steel up to new records in the thirdquarter, higher than those reached in the final quarter of last year, it islittle surprise that China’s share of global welded tube and pipe trade isalso estimated to have skyrocketed in the last quarter (see chart). China’sprices for welded material remains at record lows, with ERW API 5L gradeB at $430/t FOB and LSAW API 5L X60 at $560/t FOB. However, with respectto our intelligence of this month on the Middle Eastern market, Chinesewelded linepipe prices may be transacting even lower in some regions.In the UAE we have heard China-origin ERW API 5L B material traded at$400-500/t CFR Jebel Ali. Assuming freight rates of between $40-50/t, thissuggests that there could be trades occurring at as low as $350/t FOB China– an unprecedented level for this product group.
