As we noted last month, and after discussions that lasted up to 10 years, China and Russia finally agreed a long-term supply agreement for natural gas. Price had been the sticking point and while not publicly disclosed, MBR suggests that the price is closer to $350 per thousand cubic metres delivered compared to an average of $380 delivered to European customers, although some analysts suggest an even lower price. The political desire to swing a deal given the current situation in the Ukraine led, in our opinion, to the Russians giving some ground on price, although it is substantially higher than the reported $235 for central Asian supplies.
