The past year was not a banner year for international marketing of small ruminants. There are several reasons for the decrease in export of Canadian goat genetics. The first reason is a lack of suitable transport to most of the Latin American countries that are interested in obtaining Canadian goats for breeding stock. Over the past several years, airlines flying to these sun spots have gone to smaller aircraft that cannot accommodate the pallets that are required for livestock. As a result, virtually all of those Latin American markets for live animals are closed to us. Embryos and semen can of course be shipped to most of those countries, but when all costs are in for embryo transfer or cervical A.I., they must do a large program in order for that to be cost effective. With smaller programs, the cost of each live kid on the ground usually works out to be higher than the purchase of a live animal. Consequently, there is little interest in these programs in most Latin American countries.
