Ten years ago an Arizona nurse midwife, Cindy Packard, instigated a service project to make 2,000 birthing kits to send to Mozambique. Cindy had learned of extremely high rates of infant and child mortality, and decided that she wanted to make a difference. In 2001 she flew to Mozambique with the birthing kits aftid intentions to educate traditional birth attendants. She then formed the Care for Life (CFL) NGO (Non Governmental Organization) with the mission statement, "To alleviate suffering, promote self reliance, and instill hope" (http://www.careforlife.org).
