Unable to preserve prices, US tin mills able to buy in raw materials and supplies at international prices have at least had a chance to maintain margins (however slender). They now begin the year with some grounds for hoping that it will be less painful than 2015. The battery of investigations by the Department of Commerce (DoC) into the coil trade are well advanced, and import tonnages were already declining as they got under way. Import totals for the year are likely to show all steel imports 12% lower than in 2014 and imports of finished products 5% lower.
