The surge in demand for nickel starting from the second half of 1999 has seen strong drawdowns on LME inventories, falling to a recent low of 42,210 tonnes on February 2. Healthy demand from consumers has seen new shipments of nickel go straight to consumers, rather than being put in warehouse. Furthermore, producers are having difficulty making up the shortfall; anecdotal evidence indicating that their own stocks have been run down considerably over the past twelve months. Despite the announcements of established producers that idled capacities will come back on-stream, the response will not be immediate, and hence warehouse inventories will continue decline over the short-term.
