摘要

REMEMBER THE RINGTONE? Just two years ago consumers were spending $1 billion a year on song snippets for their cellphones. Established musical acts recorded ringtone versions of their songs, and some composers set out to write tunes that had hooks and melodies that would lend themselves to tones. (Think: 50 Cent's "In da Club.") Then came text messaging. And smartphones. And mobile apps. U.S. ringtone revenue this year will reach about $750 million, down from $881 million in 2007 - and the business will be nonexistent in 2016, says IBIS World, a consumer analyst group. A big reason consumers are eschewing personalized ringtones? Cellphones simply don't ring as much as they used to.
