One of the consequences of Directive 98/79/EC on In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) Medical Devices coming into force is the obligation for all manufacturers to meet the "essential requirements" in terms of the information supplied on the labels and packaging of the devices and in the instructions for use provided with the device.Due to limited space, especially on the vials of a diagnostic kit, the use of symbols has always been important when designing product labels. However, the obligation to translate all this information into all 21 languages of the European Union has aggravated the situation, making the use of symbols indispensable.The role of the symbol is therefore to convey information. According to the standard ISO 3461-1, a graphical symbol is defined as: "A figure visually perceptible, used to transmit information independently of language. Such figures are composed of drawings of objects, alphanumeric characters and other communication signs."
