摘要

Communicating -with the adolescent patient is key for understanding the risk-taking activities that lead to an increase in mortality and mobility in this age group. Feeling comfortable and confident discussing sex, drugs and rock and roll (and even movies and sports) can be a challenge to the practicing physician, let alone the medical student. How to teach and practice the skill-set that is required with an adolescent patient is where adolescent standardized (simulated) patients (SPs) come in. However, compared to the adult SP first described by Barrows (1964), and now used in the majority of medical schools, adolescent SPs are far less prevalent. Why? What are the barriers and where should we venture with caution?
