The aim of this study was to evaluate the course of infection of mallophagan Werneckiella equi in primitive Polish horses during the alcove breeding period [date not given]. In 6-20% of mares, mallophagans were found during the entire period of the study. In leading stallions, the intensity of infection was insignificant and the prevalence reached 20%. Similarly, low prevalences were observed in geldings and 1.5-year-old mares, but the incidence was subsequently increased. The height of mallophagan intensity occurred in April and the highest prevalence was observed in May. In one-year-old mares from free breeding, the parasites were discovered before weaning, while for those caught in the forest and taken into the stable in January, up to 50% were infected with mallophagans, with prevalences of 85 and 100% in March and April, respectively. Infection of one-year-old stallions from alcove breeding was considerably higher than in mares. In this group of horses, mallophagans occurred as early as the preweaning period. After weaning, the intensity of invasion increased, attaining its height in April. In 89% of stallions caught in the forest, mallophagans were observed in January, after they were moved into stables. Several factors influenced the mallophagan infection of primitive Polish horses, such as age, hair length and sex. In addition, stress as result of transfer to stables, also influenced the intensity of infection in mares and stallions from free breeding..
