Last December 19th I had the real pleasure of meeting Myron Kimnach for lunch. I hadn't seen him since September 2011 at the Huntington Symposium so it was especially good to catch up. When one and one's antique back are just a week short of 91 (or 62.5 with an anxiously ineffective aortic valve) one doesn't like to take indefinite recrudescence for granted, not of course that any one ever should.The immediate goal of the meeting was to transfer Myron's extensive tape collection - everything from Gesualdo to Debussy - to me, so a van-owning friend drove with me from Vista up to Azusa near Pasadena. Myron is in the process of downsizing, and he knew that I had space and a curious ear. His Conophytum collection already went to me, in stages, but he has so many other collections and interests! - haworthias, echeverias, orchids, shells, botanical books, biographies, histories, old prints, deluxe editions of classic novels (Austen, Doyle), a complete set of KuaS, all lovingly curated.Another friend arrived and we four made our way to the orchid house. Through the small dusky jungle I saw a sunnier back shelf where the original Argyrops spilled out of a clay pot. How it had grown since I last visited Myron's old Huntington digs! (Samewood-and-glass greenhouse,far grander surroundings.) Could I please have a cutting? Of course... but didn't I give you one long ago? Yes, back in 1984. Blushing, I had to confess that my own copy had expired a few months earlier, all the leaf-pairs having developedprogressive anisophylly. By 2012 only a single leaf was left on each of three short branches - and then there was just one, looking like the late Miley Cyrus's broad-based tongue. Meanwhile, Myron's plant had developed leggy stems to two inches long. For a plant born shortly before I was, what does one expect? Accumulated internodes have to go somewhere.*Myron gave me three cuttings of Argyrops, so I pocketed these and we all went out to lunch. The trio had their usual carbon dioxide, while we humans borrowed chlorophyll from lettuces at a giant salad bar. An interesting place, sociologically. There werelarge pots of steamed rice on offer along with siracha sauce (fire concentrated into a chili-coloured liquid), foods absent at most such bars - but this was in an Oriental neighbourhood. The dreadful desserts included low-fat ice cream (a contradictionin therms) and emulsified shaving cream doctored with saccharine ("no-sugar mousse"). But the greenery was good and endlessly abundant.
