摘要

It is late April in 2010 and another trip to South Africa beckoned. As the saying goes "if it ain't broke then don't fix it". So we planned to pretty much repeat our travelling arrangements to and within South Africa that had worked out so well over the past couple of years. My travelling companions were once again three good friends: Chris Rodgerson, Alice and Alan Vanden Bon. On this trip we were to spend almost 18 days predominantly in the Northern Cape region looking for succulents, with a special focus on the genus Conophytum. We rented a couple of 4WD vehicles that we had been so impressed with on past trips (Toyota Hilux twin-cab) fully equipped both in terms of safety (e.g., two spare tyres and sand ladders on each vehicle) and comfort (a fridge). On previous trips we had devoted a lot of our time in the Western Cape looking for populations of the more southerly recorded conos such as C.turrigerum, C.luckhoffii and C.minusculum. This time we wanted to extend our range and start to explore parts ofBushmanland and some remoter hills in the Richtersveld. Arrival and pick up of the vehicles was straightforward (the overnight flight from London arrives early morning in Cape Town allowing a first full day's activity). After stocking up on supplies ata local supermarket on the outskirts of Cape Town, we headed north on the N7. Within a couple of hours we put the heavy rains of the Cape behind us (in fact we did not see any more rain until we returned to the airport at the end of the trip). We headedfirst to an area on the northern extent of the Knersvlakte to see if we could extend the range of one of the more recently described conos, C.hyracis. At present this is only known from a single locality. The geological map for the area (Loeriesfontein 250k) was published in digital form just a few days before we left the UK. This allowed me to highlight a couple of likely spots that shared the same geology as the TL. The two targets also looked promising on Google Earth in terms of slope, aspect etc. Alas, it was not to be (yet again - we similarly failed to find any more populations of C.hyracis in 2009) and whilst we covered a decent amount of ground ranging in aspect we failed to find more C.hyracis. All we could locate were simply some of the common conos for the general area, namely C.uviforme ssp. decoratum and C.minutum). Maybe C.hyracis is a genuine single hill endemic like so many other conos or maybe we need to look again? Whilst Chris and I continued our hunt in vain, Alice and Alan headedover to the known locality. What they discovered was not promising as many C.hyracis were dead and the few plants they found were in poor shape indeed - most likely the result of the severe lack of rainfall in the area. That night was spent at a local farm near Kliprand where we were able to properly organise our gear, as well as shower and dine well.
