Welduction's SCPL~R (semicircle, phase-locked) process is used for selective heating of small diameters of irregular surfaces adjacent or confined within larger diameters, which normally would require a clam shell or probe type inductor. It is appropriate for induction hardening and tempering crankshafts and camshafts made from medium carbon steel. It improves on current technology with its simple design and multiple applications. Current processes and machinery utilise the 'Figure 8' or side-approaching inductor coil for heat treating crankshafts and camshafts. With the Figure 8 process, only 25 percent to 30 percent of the feature face is heated at a time. This requires the part to be rotated with complex hydraulically counter-balanced heat stations. As a result, the part has to be heated for a long period of time. Tight air gaps between the part being processed and the inductor coil produce arcing as the coil unintentionally touches the part. Arcing can lead to frequent and costly coil repairs. Welduction claims its SCPL process eliminates these costly inefficiencies by encompassing the whole part, full coverage single shot. SCPL induction technology can also save time and money.
