A leading manufacturer claimed recently that UK jobs are now at serious risk because of Government inaction over the removal of import barriers for steel. "Two of the world's largest automotive component producers - Visteon and Delphi - announced in the US last week that they would move production to low cost economies if protectionist measures restricting imported steel supplies were not removed," said Phillip Hadley, President of the Confederation of British Metalforming (CBM). "We face exactly the same restrictions on this side of the Atlantic, with contracts becoming permanently lost to the UK as EU import controls bite hard," said Hadley, who employs 450 people. "Our Government appears not to have noticed that artificially high raw material prices are now killing manufacturing jobs at an accelerating rate."
