With friends like George Bush......well, you know the rest. The idea of shoring up struggling industries went out of fashion this side of the puddle some years age, and throughout the difficult trading period experienced by our own manufacturing sector (the past thirty years, not just since the exchange rate hike four years age) UK companies have had to cope with unprecedented levels of global competition. 'Lame ducks' have gone the way of all victims of Darwinian principles, with little protection provided by our government.Painful yes, but possibly character-building, and allowing natural selection to manipulate and change the corporate gene-pool may even generate a manufacturing culture from which a new breed of lean, successful companies can emerge. Perhaps we thought our partners in 'the special relationship' were similarly disposed - although it has to be said that the USA's huge domestic market provides some insulation from the fluctuations of international commerce. However, the world's leading advocate of open trade has now imposed unprecedented import tariff levels on steel, putting jobs at risk across Europe - and, it's been suggested, violating World Trade Organisation rules. The rumoured stirrings of recovery in the USA must be worryingly feeble to justify this move.
