ACCORDING to Neil Prescott, CNC applications manager at Heidenhain (GB), some 80% of machining centres in the UK are not equipped with probing. The vast majority of these are vertical machining centres (VMCs) - exactly the machines that could benefit the most from either tool probing or full spindle touch probing. 'Probes are equally well suited to both vertical and horizontal machines,' comments Colin Price, business manager at Renishaw; 'and there are significant benefits with both small and large runs of components. In the UK over 40% of new machining centres are fitted with probing, with less on existing installed machines. Renishaw has seen a substantial increase in the awareness of probing in the UK and overseas, and retrofits hundreds of systems to existing machines every year, Our team of retrofit engineers, with years of practical experience, provide a rapid response to customer needs during, and long after, installation.'
