HELLER Machine Tools at its plant in Redditch, West Midlands, has installed a machine with the Blum Novotest laser tool management system fitted for a customer working with 'difficult' tooling. The aim is to eliminate the risk of small and fragile tools breaking during the machining cycle. Says Geoff Lloyd: 'Working in partnership with our customer to develop the most efficient and profitable machining process is the essence of Heller. We offer the Blum Novotest tool management system as an option for all our customers because it is a viable alternative to tool presetting systems and effectively monitors tools throughout the machining cycle - over 40 percent of scrap parts are due to undetected tool damage. The Blum Novotest system ensures not only that the tool is actually in place, but adjusts automatically the off-sets by measuring tool length and diameter, it also warns if a tool is broken. These are important features for efficient production, most especially in unmanned operations.
