Siemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I & S)~(1)) has been awarded a contract by Shanghai Meishan Co. Ltd. to supply the automation and electrical systems for a new continuous slab caster n the Meishan steelworks. The project will also involve modernization of the existing production facilities. The value of the contract is around 5 million euros. Start of casting in the new plant is scheduled for the first quarter of 2003.Shanghai Meishan Co., which belongs to the Baosteel Group of Shanghai, is building a new single-strand slab caster in the Meishan steelworks, located in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu. For this caster No. 2, Siemens is supplying the drives as well as the basic automation, with technological control functions such as breakout prediction, mould level control and load sharing control as well as the process automation system (Level 2). The contract also includes the production planning system (Level 3) both for the new continuous caster and also for the existing steelworks with its two-strand slab caster. Voest Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (UK) Ltd. is the leader of the consortium responsible for supplying the mechanical equipment.
