It's well accepted now that quality-based activities are part of shop floor life, that inspection is part of production. Global competitiveness also requires quality management to be become integrated with the overall business process, Malcolm Bird explains to Mike Excell. The lob title says it all. Malcolm Bird is director of quality and sustainable development at GKN automotive Driveline. 'Quality', in other words does not exist in a vacuum, but has to be parf of a joined up management philosophy. Bird was a leading player in the creation of the ISO9001/9004:2000 quality management standards; and, as part of the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), the production of IOS/TS16949, the first global quality system standard for vehicle manufacture.
