In the subcontracting sector much can be achieved with the right attitude and the right help. Subcontractors, faced with price competition from overseas, a growing legislative burden and shorter forward order books, have had to become more resilient and more innovative to survive. Nowhere illustrates this more clearly than the West Midlands, where the concerns and challenges facing subcontractors are a good indicator for the whole UK. The way they are responding shows what can be achieved with the right attitude and the right help. According to Rachel Eade of Accelerate, a strategic automotive supply chain initiative set up to assist West Midlands SMEs achieve sustainable improvements, subcontractors are coping by developing new business models. 'The region has acknowledged strengths in innovation and design and is using these attributes to add value. More subcontractors are offering design services and moving from manufacturing discrete components to supplying complete sub-assemblies. Companies are also looking to work within partnerships - effectively becoming pert of their customer's organisation. If you are part of their infrastructure then you start to become indispensable.
