They say that where there's muck there's brass, but it doesn't have to be like that. We look at a heavy duty engineering workshop, in one of our most traditional industries, which is cleaning up its act - with benefits for productivity as well as health and safety. THE first thing that strikes you when you walk into Gerry Mehigan's office is the Value Stream Mapping chart which covers most of one wall; it's good to see that the practical application of lean principles is catching on. You'll already have been pleasantry surprised by the production area you've just walked through - the pipe shop is remarkably clean for a 'heavy industry' environment; and all this follows the revelation that a traditional UK industry often consigned in the public consciousness to the 'where are they now' sector is still thriving. We're talking about shipbuilding on the Clyde.
