One of the unwanted side effects of China's rapid development has been a dramatic rise in breast cancer. "We are seeing a 3 percent increase in the incidence of breast cancer in China each year; that is the highest increase of any cancer anywhere in the world," says Erwei Song, a professor at the Breast Tumor Center and Deputy Director of the Memorial Hospital at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China. In the country's urban populations 75 out of every 100,000 women develop breast cancer each year. This represents a two-to-three-fold increase from just 30 years ago and is rapidly approaching rates previously seen only in more developed countries.
