Wastewater, whether it is domestic or industrial,represents a great opportunity to recover water, energyor chemicals, and nutrients. Today, wastewater treatmentis energy-consuming, and does not recover the resourcesfrom the wastewater. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs),which have recently been developed, allow for adequateharvesting of the energy or for the production of highquality chemicals. In this article, the basic principlesand opportunities of BESs in the context of wastewatertreatment are explained.
