Not since the cancellation of Cazaly Iron's Shovelanna application has the power under section 111A of the Mining Act 1978 (WA) been used in such a controversial way. The Minister stated that he followed advice from the Environmental Protection Authority, which indicated that coal mining in the area posed an unacceptable environmental risk. The same advice led the State Government to reject the Vasse Coal proposal last February.
