As the remnants of the British car industry have stumbled from drama to crisis in the past few years, a familiar pattern has emerged: A company collapses, only to be saved by super-wealthy businessmen or corporations, usually headquartered in an emerging market. So Rover fell to Chinese ownership, Jaguar and Land-Rover to India's Tata, and LDV was salvaged by Russia's richest oligarch. Strangely similar destinies for brands that were once part of the British Leyland empire; brands that couldn't survive on their own, and that didn't fit the global portfolios of major automakers.
