The 'intelligent' car already provides from A to Z. Now developments are afoot to make it much, much smarter. Within five years an inexpensive sensor that allows every vehicle to transmit information on its own condition and the conditions around it will be available to automakers, and could become the norm within a decade. Going under the name of "Smartdust" and costing around sop, scientists believe it will become as much a part of 21st century reality as the worldwide web. Development is UK-centred and funded (aided by EU cash) and testing is under way in Britain, Germany, France and Spain.
