Britain's biggest showroom slump in living memory triggered unprecedented pain across every automotive sector - but two beleaguered car manufacturers now have their sights set on gain, reports MAURICE GLOVER. Honda Motor made the headlines earlier this year when it responded to the economic crisis by locking the gates of its major European production centre for four months. Then Nissan doled out further gloom by laying off many of the workers who had helped it become the nation's most successful car exporter. But an air of optimism is once again pervading the production lines of both companies after they axed a total of 2,500 jobs.
