Since its arrival in the North East 23 years ago, Nissan has consistently been named the most productive plant in Europe. But that achievement must have a hollow ring among 1,200 workers who are to lose their jobs. It was less than six months ago that Sunderland's Nissan factory was still riding the crest of a wave. For 10 years, it had been Britain's biggest car producer and for the last eight years its most prolific exporter. It was also renowned for being Europe's most efficient car plant.
