To ensure its brakes are up to original equipment quality, Delphi puts them through a series of punishing tests in the Austrian Alps. VAUGHAN FREEMAN accompanied a product development team on a recent session. The front right wheel of our people carrier is billowing blue smoke and the air reeks of scorched brake pads and glowing discs. We are five miles into the descent of a snaking Austrian alpine road, testing brake pads. But attention is focused not on the people carrier. Instead, it's a Volvo V70 T5, rigged out with computers, a printer, monitor screen, sandbags to simulate luggage and passengers, and an array of sensors monitoring (for all four wheels) brake pad temperatures, brake fluid temperatures, brake pedal pressure and pedal travel.
