As the transport secretary mulls over a change to MOT frequency, GARETH PRICE meets the RMI's John Ball and Stuart James to hear the case for retaining an annual approach. There are now about 21,000 MOT test stations across the UK, explains John Ball, chairman of MOT at the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI). Spectacular growth has been driven by larger organisations diversifying into the scheme. "It used to be around 18,000 but what's driven it is fastfits - people like Kwik Fit who now have over 500, groups like Halfords who have 200-plus, and there's lots of interest from dealerships expanding into the MOT scheme over the last few years. Dealers will use it as part of a package with service programmes."
