The Merelani Hills in north-east Tanzania is recognized as one of the world's most important and intriguing gem localities. This location is famous enough that a whole issue of Miner alogical Record (September-October 2009) was devoted to it. Merelani derives its fame from a very unique gem mineral, tanzanite - the purplish, vanadium-rich variety of zoisite. Within the mineral collecting community, tanzanite's reputation rivals that of diamond, gold, or "Paraiba" tourmaline. The beautiful crystals of tanzanite found in Merelani have been famous since the 1960s, when they were first discovered, and the better crystals are prize specimens for many collectors. However, tanzanite's popularity seems to have overshadowed several other interesting minerals that can be found at Merelani. Among these is the blocky, pale blue prehnite found on tanzanite (Figure 1).
