Uranium minerals are some of the most colorful of all mineral specimens. But we do not get to see them as much as we would like, for a number of reasons: First, uranium minerals are radioactive, so many museums avoid displaying them for fear of upsetting their patrons. Humans have a remarkably poor ability to judge risk, so people fear the insignificant amount of radiation given off by uranium mineral specimens in a showcase, whereas they blithely ride motorcycles while texting heroin dealers.
