The Norway mine is a small iron mine located in the city of Norway in Upper Michigan's Dickinson County. It is one of the easternmost mines in what is known as the Menominee Range, a belt of iron-bearing rock that starts in adjacent Iron County to the west, dips slightly into neighboring Wisconsin (Florence County) and then terminates in Dickinson County, just a few kilometers east of the Norway mine (Fig. 3 on page 4). Dickinson County's share of this iron range comprises circa 46 mines, 12 prospects, and 7 explorations, (MDNR, pers. comm. 2013) all now abandoned except for the open pit Groveland mine where post-closure evaluation of aggregate, "frac" sand, and other potential commodities continues, and the Vulcan mine, which has been converted into a tourist destination offering seasonal underground tours.
