During the early stages of WWII, there was considerable efforts made in protecting U.S. troops from enemy aircraft. The German Ju87 "Stuka," and the proven effectiveness of Japanese airpower were no doubt cause for many nights of lost sleep. The standard U.S. heavy machine gun, the M2 Browning, was, and indeed still is, a formidable weapon. Its heavy slug coupled with its long range and impressive accuracy made it a natural for antiaircraft work. And with lives on the line, the more concentrated the firepower could be, the better.
